In an obvious example of how your little bit helps us go a long way… since our last print newsletter, 23 brothers contributed a combined amount totaling $3,200. Wow. Let’s keep it up!

In the 1972-73 academic year, brother Hank Mattox (Spring ’69) was elected the very first president of the newly recognized Virginia Tech Interfraternity Council.

We’re thrilled to share that on November 8, 2008 at the 35th Anniversary Greek Alumni Gala in Blacksburg, the Virginia Tech Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life honored Hank with the establishment of the Henry S. Mattox Fraternity Alumni of the Year Award.

This award will be given annually in recognition of a Virginia Tech Fraternity Alumni who demonstrates the most outstanding service and commitment to the Mission of Virginia Tech and the Principles and Values of the American Fraternity Movement.

Congratulations Hank – thanks for representing us so well, then and now.

Generously hosted by Charlie Webb (Spring ’85) and Peyton Winfree (Fall ’85), the final Lane Stadium tailgate of 2008 will feature Bloody Marys and an assortment of excellent food. Please join us bright and early at 9:00 am tomorrow at the usual tailgate spot in the shadow of Lane Stadium. Kickoff is at noon.

We’ll be holding our Alumni Association annual meeting this Saturday, November 22 at the DKE House at 1:30pm. Please come by to ask demanding questions of your Alumni Board. We’ll go over our progress and talk about plans for next year.

We’d also like to invite you to stop by the house beforehand, between noon and 1:30pm, for a tour of the renovated attic and second floor facilities. We’ll also be showing off plans for the next phase on the first floor!

They’re still going, and going strong. Our list of alumni tailgate attendees to date is well over 50 by now. Why not join us and add your name to the list?

Lynn Leslie (Winter ’88) is hosting the event to help you rekindle old friendships with familiar faces. Kickoff is at 5:30 pm, so we will start at 2:30 pm.

As always, our location is Lot 4, Space 94, located across Spring Drive from the football stadium and just down from the softball field. We’re in the corner, with one side facing Southgate Drive and the other side backing up to the track. See you there.

We are continuing to attract new believers to the Alumni Tailgate.

A full list of attendees is forthcoming, but we did see Jerry Bryant, Chuck Bradley (Winter ’76) and Charlie Webb (Spring ’85) among others, plus an awful lot of active brothers including all 10 Fall ’08 pledges. Impressive. And, the Hokies might even have an offense. Things are looking up.

On that note we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve come up with a real reason to come to the Duke game on November 22:

After two tailgates we’ve seen 35 different Deke Alumni. That’s a pretty good start for a brand new event. And this weekend is Homecoming, and we’re hoping to add to the total.

We know many of you will be in town… please join us on Saturday for the Western Kentucky tailgate!

Bert Burson (Winter ’79) is hosting the event this week to help you rekindle old friendships with familiar faces. Kickoff is at 1:30 pm, so we’ll start at 10:30.

The Alumni Association’s first two stadium lot tailgates at the Furman and Georgia Tech games came together successfully, with our next one planned for the coming weekend.

Feedback from alumni was uniformly positive with 15 alumni and guests attending the Furman tailgate and a whopping 39 at the Georgia Tech tailgate, in addition to our active brothers who helped make it happen.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and to those that helped make it happen – especially Theta Bowden and the Active Chapter.

The first stadium Alumni Tailgate last week went smoothly with attendance of about 15 alumni Dekes and guests – a good start for our first event at a game against a cupcake opponent.

Thanks to Theta Bowden (Fall ’70) for hosting and to Mickey Hayes (Spring ’62) for supplying the parking space.

It’s time to raise the stakes this weekend against Georgia Tech… VT’s ACC debut and probably the best home game to see this season. We’re aiming to double our turnout. We know many of you will be in town… please join us at 11:00am on Saturday to rekindle old friendships with familiar faces!
