We have two pieces of business for our Alumni, Parents, and Friends today:

1. The 2nd annual “Habitat for Inhumanity” is scheduled for Saturday, April 21st from 9am-1pm, prior to the Spring Game.

As you can imagine, a grand old lady like the DKE House sometimes needs a little help, especially given her role as an illustrious fraternity house. So to give her a little bit of a lift, last year the alumni started the tradition of taking on a few house improvement tasks before the Spring Game, working together with the active brotherhood.

We are looking for any and all kinds of help. This year’s challenges include replacing the kitchen wall oven, along with some landscaping, painting and other miscellaneous tasks.

If you are planning to be in town for the Spring Game we hope that you can stop by the DKE House on Roanoke Street beforehand. Coffee/donuts will be served!

Also, if you have time to clean out your garage we would also gladly accept any type of donations of used goods suitable for ‘frat house’ use. Some examples are tools, a working lawn mower, painting supplies and bar stools etc. — things like these are always appreciated. Also if you are wondering what to do with your old DKE paddle, you can always become immortalized and donate your paddle to the house collection for mounting on the wall.

We plan to quit (if we ever get started on) the House projects in time for…

2. The 1st annual Spring Game Tailgate, held at our usual Lot 4, Space 94 location starting around 1:30pm!

The VT DKE Alumni Tailgate Committee (i.e. Charlie Webb) has organized a large commercial-scale grill to set up at our usual Lot 4 location for a proper pre-game event! We’ll grill hamburgers and hot dogs for all comers — and we’ll even have beer. If you’re coming to the Spring Game, come tailgate with us!

Of course all this is somewhat dependent on Lot 4 being open for parking and the weather cooperating. As such we could easily just end up grilling some burgers and few beers at DKE house, spin some tales, pretend we did some work, and talk about Hokie football.

Hope to see anyone and everyone in Blacksburg this weekend!

We finally got our tabulation together. Thanks to the following alumni and friends that have supported the fraternity with dues/donations/gifts/tailgate sponsorships in calendar year 2011.

A total of 76 individuals and a few corporate matching gifts provided financial and in-kind contributions totalling $28,409. WE THANK YOU! If we missed your name, please let us know. More than likely it is our error (e.g. Jack Baker getting extra credit for Jim Baker’s donations in past two years). We have one anonymous donation out there that was sent directly on-line up for claim!

Please check our donor lists (under the Fundraising tab) for a cumulative listing of all supporters for the past 12+ years!

We heard from Lt. Patrick King, USN (Spring ’01) yesterday… he’s wrapping up his tour with an ISAF Provincial Reconstruction Team in Paktika Province, and will be home in San Diego next month!

Last month we got a DKE flag out to Pat for some photo opportunities. Check out the photo he sent back!

“Thanks much for the flag… I just took the flag out on a mission on the 11th……my 30th birthday……..and got some great pics of it with me up on a snowy mountaintop.”

Pat served as chapter president in 2004-05 before graduating Cum Laude in May 2005 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He immediately entered the U.S. Navy, graduating from Officer Candidate School and Nuclear Power School, followed by a tour aboard the USS Eisenhower.

We’re still not sure how a Navy nuclear engineer ended up on a reconstruction team in an Afghanistan hot zone, but Pat’s been a good sport about the adventure. We’re all looking forward to having him home and dragging him into some projects with the Alumni Board.

Thanks for your service Pat!

So we suck at keeping in touch. We’ll do better this year, we promise.

But overlooked in the post-reunion shuffle and the holidays madness was the very important news that you guys elected a new Alumni Board for 2012-13. This election saw one of the highest turnouts ever — a stunning five ballots returned. Clearly our <del>dictatorial</del> political process is strong.

In any case, much of the regular cast of characters is back for yet another tour of duty: Chairman Dan Johnson (Spring ’74), Secretary Jim Scanlon (Spring ’02) and Director-At-Large Charlie Munn (Fall ’74) were all conned into another two years of servitude.

But in a stunning turn of events, we dragged some new blood into the fold! (Well, not really “new” per se — these guys are both retreads from our original Alumni Board 13 years ago!) So please join us in welcoming (back) Treasurer Mike Beam (Winter ’85) and Director-At-Large Jim Daniel (Fall ’84) — as they say, misery loves company.

You can view the full Board roster, including committee members and other volunteers, at our Board Of Directors page.

Don’t remember how our Alumni Board operates and is elected? Want to join a committee, offer opinions on our next conference call, or otherwise get involved? See the Board Of Directors page for the scoop.

Take it from us, the reunion was great! We’d like to thank all who were involved for the many hours of work they put in towards making last weekend what it was.

We were delighted to hear the many stories and memories that were shared at the banquet — especially the history of our friend B.C. Moose, who you can bet had a great weekend as well.

Saturday, with the exception of the final score, was a great chance for us all to be together and celebrate what makes us who we are, Friends From the Heart Forever. The house full of loud and obnoxious Dekes before the tailgate and the massive circus-sized tent next to Lane Stadium were images that will linger in our thoughts until we do it again… 50-80-110 anyone?

We welcome all to return and enjoy some time at the house with us soon. Next weekend is the Miami game and we hope to see you there!

FFTHF,
